We are excited to announce a remarkable addition to our museum's collection. Soon, visitors will have the chance to discover an intriguing new exhibit showcasing historic mine cars, sourced directly from the site of the once-bustling Gebo Mine. These artifacts embody a crucial part of our region's industrial heritage and highlight the commitment of local preservationists.
These priceless historical treasures came close to being lost forever. When the Bureau of Reclamations began large-scale land reclamation at the Gebo Mine site in the 1980s, they reshaped the land and buried every remnant of the mine, disregarding the site's historical value and its many artifacts. Recognizing the exceptional historical significance of these mining cars three residents stepped in to rescue them. Through their relentless dedication, they successfully salvaged these essential elements of the Gebo legacy, ensuring that they would not be buried or destroyed.
Our ambitious plan for these rescued treasures includes a careful restoration process to revive them to their original condition. Once fully restored, these authentic mine cars will be proudly displayed on a rebuilt track.
